چکیده

A planetary microlensing event occurs when a planet perturbs one of the two images created in a point-mass microlensing event, causing a deviation from the standard Paczyński curve. Determination of the two physical parameters that can be extracted from a planetary microlensing event, the planet/star mass ratio q, and the planet/star separation in units of the stellar Einstein ring, yp, is hampered by several types of degeneracies. There are two distinct and qualitatively different classes of planetary events: major and minor image perturbations. For major image perturbations, there is a potentially crippling continuous degeneracy in q which is of order δ d , where δd is the maximum fractional deviation of the planetary perturbation. Since the threshold of detection is expected to be δd ∼ 5%, this degeneracy in q can be a factor of ∼ 20. For minor image perturbations, the continuous degeneracy in q is considerably less severe, and is typically less than a factor 4. We show that these degeneracies can be resolved by observations from dedicated telescopes on several continents together with optical/infrared photometry from one of these sites. There also exists a class of discrete degeneracies. These are typically easy to resolve given good temporal coverage of the planetary 1 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow

Planet Sensitivity from Combined Ground- and Space-based Microlensing Observations

To move one step forward toward a Galactic distribution of planets, we present the first planet sensitivity analysis for microlensing events with simultaneous observations from space and the ground. We present this analysis for two such events, OGLE-2014-BLG-0939 and OGLE-2014-BLG-0124, which both show substantial planet sensitivity even though neither of them reached high magnification. This s...

Planetary Microlensing: from Prediction to Discovery

Four planets have recently been discovered by gravitational microlensing. The most recent of these discoveries is the lightest planet known to exist around a normal star. The detection of planets in gravitational microlensing events was predicted over a decade ago. Microlensing is now a mature field of astrophysical research and the recent planet detections herald a new chapter in the hunt for ...

Gravitational microlensing of stars with transiting planets

If planetary systems are ubiquitous then a fraction of stars should possess a transiting planet when being microlensed. This paper presents a study of the influence of such planets on microlensing light curves. For the giant planets recently identified, the deviations in the light curve can be substantial, although the specifics of the perturbations are dependent upon the radius of the planet r...

Parameter degeneracies and (un)predictability of gravitational microlensing events

Some of the difficulties in determining the underlying physical properties that are relevant for observed anomalies in microlensing light curves, such as the mass and separation of extrasolar planets orbiting the lens star, or the relative source-lens parallax, are already anchored in factors that limit the amount of information available from ordinary microlensing events and in the way these a...

The PLANET microlensing follow-up network: Results and prospects for the detection of extra-solar planets

Among various techniques to search for extrasolar planets, microlensing has some unique characteristics. Contrary to all other methods which favour nearby objects, microlensing is sensitive to planets around stars at distances of several kpc. These stars act as gravitational lenses leading to a brightening of observed luminous source stars. The lens stars that are tested for the presence of pla...
